Bruce Willis' RED proves "extremely dangerous" in the box office with $22.5M opening
Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman were present at the red carpet premiere in Grauman's Chinese Theatre for RED today in Hollywood. Bruce Willis' co-stars from the Expendables also attended the event.
Bruce Willis' new film RED is loosely based on an eponymous comic book published by DC Comics imprint Homage. The film's title is derived from the file of protagonist CIA agent Frank Moses, played by Bruce Willis, meaning "retired, extremely dangerous." Moses is forced to come out of retirement and reassemble his team once again as the CIA threatens to kill him. RED appears to be doing well in the box office, with $22.5 million on its opening.
Willis' new film is well-received among critics, with THE DAGGER PRESS saying, "The best part of this film by far is the cast. A better metaphor could not be made for un-retirement than the top notch performance of the three of the four main characters."
This seem to resonate with the Los Angeles Times, predicting that RED will probabbly play for several weeks in theatres. The paper's Company Town section said:
"While its opening wasn't huge, ticket sales rose 26% from Friday to Saturday and audiences gave the picture an average grade of A-, according to market research firm CinemaScore."
"Combined with the fact that it drew a mostly older crowd, albeit one more balanced between men and women than had been expected, there's reason to believe that RED will play well for several weeks."
