The Butler: Oprah’s First Release in 2013
Oprah Winfrey's next movie, The Butler, is all set to release on Friday, Aug 16. This is going to be her first release for 2013.
Lee Daniels is the director of the movie while Danny Strong is the writer. This is the fourth film of Daniels as a director. His previously directed films are The Paperboy (2012), Precious (2009) and Shadowboxer (2005). Daniels is also an actor who acted in Shadowboxer, Agnes und seine Brüder and A Little Off Mark.
The ensemble cast of The Butler includes Forest Whitaker who plays the protagonist, Cecil Gaines. This is an historical tale of a butler who served 8 U.S. presidents in the 20th century. Laura Ziskin is the producer who passed away in 2011. The Weinstein Company is going to release the film in theatres on Aug 16.
Oprah has worked in several other films such as Ocean's Thirteen where she played herself. The celebrity talk show presenter played some major characters in some other films.
Beloved (1998)
This 1998 film was based on the novel written by Toni Morrison. Jonathan Demme directed the film and Oprah produced it. Danny Glover was the other lead of the film, along with Oprah, who received major applause for her portrayal in the film. The film received many awards, and she was even nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
Before Women Had Wings (1997)
This film was made for TV. It was based on Connie May Fowler's story where a mother starts abusing her daughters violently after her husband who also had an abusive nature committed suicide. Ellen Barkin plays the protagonist in the film, Glory Jackson, while Oprah plays Zora Williams.
Color Purple (1985)
This movie marks the acting debut of Oprah Winfrey. The Steven Spielberg film was based on the Alice Walker novel which won the Pulitzer Prize. The cast included Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Desreta Jackson and Adolph Caesar. The film is also the acting debut of Whoopi Goldberg. The film dealt with issues like sexism, racism and poverty in the earlier part of 1900s.
