Canadian Foreign Minister had announced that Canada would act enthusiastically to help Syrian civilians.

John Baird was talking the reporters in St. Petersburg. He stated that Syria was the most critical humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. Even though Canada has earlier ruled out the possibility of an active participation in a military strike on Syria, it intends to help people in Syria. Mr Baird also predicted that the crisis might not see an end soon so Canada would like to be a substantial support for the Syrian people.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister's office confirmed that Canada was prepared for an increase of its contribution to war affected regions in Syria. Canada has reportedly contributed $317 million so far while responding to the socio-political crisis in Syria. The amount has been used for the purposes of humanity, security and development.

Mr Baird appears not to be against a suggested military strike on Syria by some countries. However, he also believes that the best way to solve the crisis in Syria is a political one.

Countries all over the world are appalled by the suffering, the destruction and the violence in Syria, he said.

Nevertheless, Canada plans to play a significant role in the development of the international community for putting an end to the suffering in Syria.

Mr Baird said that Canada would not accept the establishment of a world order which encouraged dictators to use weapons of mass destruction. He termed WMD as "a poor man's nuclear weapon".

On the contrary, Dmitry Peskov - the Press Secretary to the Russian President - continued to confirm the country's position against a military strike on Syria. He said that it was not legitimate to state that the Assad government had used chemical weapons against its own people. He also added that it was not possible for other countries to know how strongly the Assad regime was supported in the country.
