By the end of the on-going week, Canada may successfully be able to pass a proposed legislation which will allow doctors to help terminally ill patients commit suicide in accordance with their wish. Doctors will help the patient in terms of the medical process involved.

The legislation is going to take place in Quebec while the law seems to be highly influenced by various similar cases in Europe. CBC News reported that there is only a limited number of the North American provinces which allow medical assistance to patients who wish to commit suicide. The American criteria for allowing such assistance include the condition that the patient may only have the possibility of living for months. The suicide is medically arranged in order to relieve the patient from the "unbearable suffering" which has no chance of being lessened by any means before their death.

The legislative committee from Quebec, which is involved in coming to a significant decision in terms of "dying with dignity", visited Europe for referring to several such cases especially from the Netherlands and Belgium. In those countries, such laws are present for over a decade now. The 2012 report by the committee eventually recommended doctors to help patients who were terminally ill. The report also recommended that proper safeguards must be taken while the circumstances should be "exceptional" to allow a patient to commit suicide.

The Canadian Web site comes with the caption: "It's your life. It's your choice." It features Dr Ed Najgebauer who announces on the Web site that he wants to help patients enjoy freedom of choice while they come to the end of their life. He claims that patients must be completely "informed" while medical decisions must be based on evidences. According to Dr Najgebauer, health care systems should concentrate less on prolonging the process of death and more on enhancing the standard of living. Dr Najgebauer is a member of the Advisory Council of Physician.
