Canadian Diplomat and Others Dead in Kenya Mall Attack [VIDEOS]

Canadian diplomat, Annemarie Desloges, 29, was killed in a mall attack in Kenya.

The attack is a part of the clash between the Kenyan army and Islamist militants. A mall in Nairobi was attacked, which left 68 dead at the least. Armed rebels attacked Westgate Mall with assault rifles and grenades on Saturday.

Witnesses confirmed that the rebels were specifically targeting non-Muslims. A number of hostages were kept inside the mall on Sunday, while the Kenyan army got engaged in a gun battle with the militants.

Al-Shabab, a Somalian rebel group which is often linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ms Desloges served at the Canadian high commission in Kenya performing her duties as a liaison officer along with the Canada Border Services Agency. Robert Munk, her husband - who was also injured in the attack, has now been released from the hospital.

Among other victims who got killed in the attack was the well-known Radio Africa host, Ruhila Adatia-Sood, who was pregnant, according to a BBC report. She was at the shopping centre's car park hosting a cooking competition.

Kofi Awoonor, 78, was also killed in the attack. He came to Nairobi to participate in a literary event. He was a former University of Ghana professor and a poet as well. Mr Awoonor was also the former chairman of the Council of State.

Mbugua Mwangi, the nephew of President Uhuru Kenyatta, got killed in the mall attack. Rosemary Wahito, his fiancée, was also among the several Kenyans who died at the shopping centre.

According to reports, two French citizens were killed in the attack, while Canada confirmed that another Canadian was also among the victims. An Aussie and three British nationals were confirmed to be dead. Other sources confirmed that a Chinese woman, a Dutch woman and a South African were also killed in the militant attack.

Update:

The second Canadian who got killed in the mall attack has been identified as a businessman from British Columbia, Naguib Damji.
