Canadian Sweetheart Eugenie Bouchard Moves to Quarter-Finals at Wimbledon

The 13^th seed from Montreal defeated Cornet in straight set 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

Bouchard's previous best at Wimbledon was in 2012 when she became the Junior Wimbledon champion. However, she was not successful at the senior level when she took part in it for the first time in 2013. She was eliminated in the 3^rd round. Reaching the quarter-finals has already become a personal record for Bouchard who has had an impressive Grand Slam performance for a few months now. She reached the semi-finals at the French Open and the Australian Open in 2014.

Genie was, however, trailing at 3-5 in the second set against the French lady who was earlier responsible for a major set-back when she beat 5-time champion Serena Williams in the 3^rd round. The 20-year-old Canadian showed her grit and perseverance when she won four consecutive games and stormed in to the next round.

Bouchard is going to face the winner of Angelique Kerber (Germany)-Maria Sharapova (Russia) match. She was defeated by Sharapova at the French Open semi-finals earlier in June. If she faces Sharapova next, it will be interesting to see if she is able to avenge her past defeat. Bouchard, nevertheless, is probably playing her best tennis at the moment. Bouchard said that she was excited to reach the quarter-finals but would require staying focussed without getting distracted. She said that she could not get carried away and lose what she had worked hard for.

Scottish player Andy Murray defeated Kevin Anderson from South Africa 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6 (8-6).

Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria beat Argentine player Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-2.

Russian player Ekaterina Makarova beat Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland 6-3 and 6-0.

Czech player Petra Kvitova defeated Shuai Peng from China 6-3 and 6-2.

Novak Djokovic from Serbia beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-3, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5).
