The majority of Canadians believe that Prince William should be the first in line to the throne, and not his father Prince Charles, following the news of Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton next year.

According to the poll by Ipsos Reid, 55 per cent of Canadians think Prince William should be first in line to the throne, which sees a 12 per cent increase from last year.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have announced their engagement this month, with April 29th next year set as their wedding date.

However, 53 per cent of Canadians also think that Canada should cut ties with the Monarchy when the reign of Queen Elizabeth II ends, says the poll. Canada is one the 13 realms which consider Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state.

In Australia, the news of Prince William's and Kate Middleton's engagement had also renewed the debate on whether Australia should shift to a republic system of government or retain its current constitutional monarchy system.

The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) called the news of Prince William's and Kate Middleton's engagement as a "very British moment." While the organization congatulated Prince William and Middleton, it also said that the news highlighted " just how remote this development was from normal Australians."

But an opposing view was held by the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM) which said that Prince William's visits to Australia had bolstered youth engagement in the current system of government.
