The recently assumed regulations prohibit a cancer charity from providing financial support to organizations currently investigated by the government.

The chairman in fundraising for breast cancer study and known across the world for her iconic pink ribbon, Susan G. Komen, declared the cutting of funds offered to Planned Parenthood associations.

Komen said they will no longer back up the associations' finances for breast cancer research and other related services.

Komen has several reasons to support Planned Parenthood centers financially. Services essential to the fundraising charity are being fully conducted by Planned Parenthood affiliates. Some of these are manual breast examination, biopsies and referrals for mammograms.

The Komen Foundation may have surrendered to the demands of antiabortion groups to cut its partnership with Planned Parenthood although the funds offered were not really used for abortions.

Planned Parenthood has served millions of women for the last five years. They have performed 4 million breast examination and 70,000 mammograms referrals. Although most patients are being referred outside, Planned Parenthood doctors and medical professionals make sure that patients are well taken care of.

Leslie Aun, Komen spokeswoman, said the stoppage of funding did not show that Planned Parenthood has done something wrong. The decision was exclusively based on the Stearns investigation. Aun added they want to maintain a good relationship with Planned Parenthood affiliates.

The incident has impacted several special groups relying on the funds from Planned Parenthood. The senior vice president of the Planned Parenthood organization from San Bernardino and Orange counties, Stephanie Kight, said a lot of breast cancer education programs will be ended.

According to Kight her affiliate had been working with Komen for a long time already. They weren't given updates regarding Komen's plan of cutting funds for Planned Parenthood.

Rumors imply that Komen's decision was influenced by political issues. If that's really the case, several centers helping women to battle with breast cancer would be extremely disappointed.
