Canelo Alvarez: Gennady Golovkin fight could happen, but insists no advantages for GGG
WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez claimed a potential super-fight against unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin could happen, but the Mexican champ insisted it has to be on his terms.
Alvarez has guaranteed that the fight with Golovkin could happen, although the Mexican middleweight was unclear of the target date. But the 25-year-old Alvarez was adamant there would be no advantages in favour of Golovkin if their much-anticipated clash ever happens.
“I’ve given many concessions, I’ve given up many advantages to get to this point in my career where I’m at,” Canelo said, reports USA Today. “One thing I’m not going to do is I’m not going to give up any concessions or any advantages to GGG.”
Ever since winning the WBC middleweight belt against Miguel Cotto in November, questions about a Golovkin fight have been hurled at Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo and GGG were initially set to negotiate for an immediate bout that would see the latter challenging for the former’s title gold, but both have not reached any agreements, which forced the WBC to put them on voluntary title defenses before facing each other in the ring.
Alvarez has been insisting on fighting at a catchweight of 155 pounds as he claimed himself to be a junior middleweight, while Golovkin, who is more focused in unifying the middleweight belts, has been clear he would only fight Canelo at the full middleweight limit of 160 pounds. If Golovkin would not agree to Alvarez’s self-imposed terms of a catchweight-stipulated match, Canelo will either be forced to vacate the title or get stripped by the WBC for not defending the middleweight belt at the full
“I’m not a middleweight,” Alvarez said, reports the RingTV. “I’m a super welterweight. That’s my weight class. I wanted to fight this time for some sort of title at super welter.”
Alvarez faces Amir Khan on May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena, while Golovkin battles Dominic Wade on Apr. 23 at the Forum in California.
