‘Captain Marvel' casting news: Olivia Wilde eager to play female superhero but with 'more complexity'
The search for the actress to play the role of Carol Danvers a.k.a. “Captain Marvel” is still on-going. Several actresses including Emily Blunt and “Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer, have already been linked with the character. However, while casting for the superhero has yet to be finalised, Olivia Wilde jumped in the bandwagon and expressed her interest to play Captain Marvel.
Cinema Blend caught up Wilde and movie director Reed Romano during the Opening Night screening of “Meadowland” at the Savannah Film Festival and asked them about their interest to join the Captain Marvel production. During the interview, Wilde admitted being a fan of superhero films and of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She also expressed her opinion on what makes a good superhero other than their powers.
“The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-ass power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity,” she said.
The actress also revealed what her version of a female Marvel superhero should be. In the same interview with Collider, Wilde said she would love to create a Marvel character “who is just as unexpected and complex as some of the male characters. She cited Iron Man for his "dry sense of humour.”
Morano on the other hand reiterated her interest to direct “Captain Marvel.” Agreeing with Wilde’s opinion about a complex superhero, Morano said it would be nice to create a story for superheroes who have issues and are flawed individuals. However, she admitted that she has yet to receive an offer to direct the film.
Wilde and Romano’s name were thrown into the “Captain Marvel” casting hat after Film School Rejects suggested the pair for the film. The fan initially wrote a story about why Morano and Wilde should be in the movie together. They tweeted their column and suggested that Wilde be cast for the titular role in “Captain Marvel.” The fan also asked if Morano would agree directing the 2019 film. Surprisingly, Morano expressed her interest to helm the film. She then re-tweeted the user’s post to Wilde, who was more than enthusiastic about the prospect of portraying Captain Marvel.
