Caroline Wozniacki Forgot To Claim Her Winnings At The US Open
Caroline Wozniacki apparently didn't have money on her mind because she forgot to claim her prize money worth $1.45 million at the 2014 US Open. After losing to Serena Williams in the finale of the tournament, Wozniacki reportedly rushed back to her Manhattan apartment, only to find out that she forgot to pick up her check.
According to the Wall Street Journal, not only did Wozniacki overlook her winnings at the Open, but she also forgot to ask about her $500,000 bonus from sponsors during her performance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The former World No. 1 doesn't really want to get into the small and trifling matters of how money really works. The international daily newspaper said that Wozniacki doesn't even keep track of her bank accounts. She also isn't fully aware how much she pays her father Piotr, who is also her coach.
Working for money may seem like a good motivation for other people. However, Wozniacki's primary motivation is playing tennis and winning in tournaments. "For me, it's about tennis and the trophies," Wozniacki told WSJ. "I'm not motivated by money," she added.
Wozniacki earns nearly $10 million per year from her endorsement deals with Adidas and Rolex, among many others. She ranked 10th in Forbes' list of highest-paid tennis athletes of 2014. The Danish tennis star insists that she doesn't think about her brand. Wozniacki said that she wants to be able to play great tennis and do well for her sponsors, but she doesn't feel any pressure because she knows that she isn't after the money.
Wozniacki currently competes in the inaugural 2014 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in China. She will play against qualifier Swiss athlete Timea Bacsinsky in the quarterfinals. A total prize money worth $2,440,070 will be given away at the tournament. Wozniacki has already secured a quarter of a million dollars just by making it to the quarterfinals. However, the main focus for the Danish star is to continue playing well and win as many matches in the remaining tournaments of the current season. She said that she wants to earn a spot at the BNP Paribas Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals in Singapore. "I'll just do my best, that's all I can do."
