Carrie Underwood Getting Hate Tweets For Her Role In 'The Sound of Music'
The live and modern recreation of "The Sound of Music" has not been aired yet, but Carrie Underwood has been receiving hate tweets for her role as Maria.
The American Idol winner confessed to Entertainment Weekly that she has been getting hate tweets ever since her casting into the musical special, which will be aired on NBC Dec. 5.
"I get hate tweets and stuff like, 'You're not Julie Andrews!'" Underwood told Entertainment Weekly. "I know I'm not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was... I know my place."
But while some die-hard fans of the musical had reservations on Underwood's casting, the original Maria expressed her support for the new Maria.
"Fifty years later, it's time somebody had another crack at it," Julie Andrews told Zap2it. "I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me. I think it's great that it's being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting for Carrie."
"I know they're not doing the movie, though. They're doing the Broadway show - that's what they have the rights to - and I don't know whether it will resonate similarly. In the movie, we cut some things from the stage version and added some songs."
This was not the first time that Andrews supported Underwood in the reprise of her classic role. She has also voiced her support during a recent interview with Larry King, as well as during the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Joining Underwood in the cast are True Blood's Stephen Moyer as Capt. Georg Von Trapp, Laura Benanti as the Captain's former fiancée Elsa Schrader, Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess and Christian Borle as Max Detweiler.
The NBC musical special is the remake of the 1959 musical, subsequently remade in a film in 1965 starring Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp.
Last year, NBC has announced Carrie's casting as Maria in the 3-hour special, along with the announcement of the network's remake of "The Sound of Music."
