Casey Donovan, Youngest Australian Idol Winner, Goes Into Acting
Five years have passed after Casey Donovan won the popular talent show on TV Australian Idol, Casey Donovan is now ready to test the waters of acting.
The young singer is set to be a part of a Shakespearean play entitled 'As You Like It.' She admits that she feels very tensed knowing that all her co-actors are experienced already with working on a production but she takes it as a challenge and a learning experience as well.
"It's very exciting," Donovan said. "Who would have thought seven years ago that I'd be doing Shakespeare?"
It will be a romantic comedy which involves a group of characters with someone who disguises as a boy named Rosalind. They run away to the Arden Forest to unravel who they are. Donovan is set to play Audrey who is attracted to a jester played out by another young actor Charlie Garber who worked with other past productions like 'The Merchant of Venice' and a television series called 'Spirited.'
The directorial work will be handled by Eamon Flack who is best known for incorporating modern settings in classical plays such as this. According to Garber, 'As You Like It' will also have a fun tone with Donovan even singing a song entitled as 'Hymen.' But certainly there would not be any pop songs for this one but the audience can expect the usual implementation of what is contemporary.
Garber personally thinks that the director's strategy is too risky yet very courageous to try out something new. "So if we feel that the audience is never going to understand (a speech) because the language is too outdated, we will try to figure out the essence of it and come up with our own version," the young actor explains.
"As You Like It" is set to be seen at the Belvoir Street Theatre by December 24.
