"Castle" Season 7 introduced a new twist in its holiday episode, creating a major change for ship Cas-kett (Castle and Beckett). Stana Katic has given viewers a heads up, and now showrunner David Amann is dishing what happens next.

Spoiler alert: This update recaps the highlights of Castle Season 7, Episode 10, titled "Bad Santa." Read at your own risk.

Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) becomes a mob family member. An old acquaintance, who happens to be a mob boss, "gave [him] a paper cut." (Kate Beckett's words for a blood pact.) The killer gets caught, but he also gets murdered in the end. This plot with Dino Scarpella (Paul Ben-Victor) is likely to be revisited in Castle Season 7.

Castle's mob connection mars his image and the whole case. After speaking with the D.A. the mayor agrees to terminate Castle's privileges at NYPD. He is "no longer permitted to work with the NYPD." Castle Season 7, Episode 10 ended without Beckett (Stana Katic) finding out what just happened.

"It's going to change the shape of the show for a few episodes, that much I can promise you," Katic told TV Line, teasing the impact of the Castle 7x10 cliffhanger.

"We thought it would give us some opportunities to upset the apple cart a little bit in terms of the Castle-Beckett professional relationship," Amann told TV Guide in an interview.

Amann also gave away some Castle Season 7 spoilers in terms of Castle's next steps and what happens next in the series. To sum up, Castle gets a private investigator's license and he finds his way back to the 12th Precinct.

Castle being away from NYPD should not worry the shippers, though. This shake-up is a "source of fun between the two characters more than it is a source of tension," according to Amann.

The last time Castle was prevented from working in NYPD was when Captain Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald) took over from the late Montgomery in Castle Season 4. The mayor came to Castle's rescue at the time. Now it's the captain who seems to want Castle to stay.

Castle Season 7 takes a holiday break after Episode 10. The series is expected to return to ABC in January.
