Catalan Independence Expressed In 400-Km Human Chain Protest
About a million Catalans joined hands that reached a 400-km human chain seen across the entire region. The protest expresses their push for the Spanish government to allow them to vote on the decision to be free and build their own nation.
All the demonstrators present at the protest wore yellow shirts and were wrapped in a banner of blue, yellow and red. Loud shouts were heard when their chain was finally completed right along the roads. One of the civil servants who joined, Ester Sarramona shared with Reuters that they wanted to see whether there will be full support for what they are fighting for. Through the protest, they are hoping that the government of Spain will be forced to listen to their plea.
Just like the rest of the Catalans, Ms Sarramona and her family insist that their part of the country has been treated unjustly when it comes to taxes and other issues concerning culture. This growing need for separatism of about 7.5 million Catalans has surely served as a troubling headache for the Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy. The Prime Minister is also trapped in a corruption scandal.
PM Rajoy has met in private with the Catalan President Artus Mas last August indicating that negotiations can continue to happen just to put an end to the long year battle over who gets the more dominant power on taxes in the region.
However, the PM says that a general vote on the independence of Catalan will only be unconstitutional and even promised to block it in court. Bernat Cabero, a demonstrator who travelled all the way from France said that all of them will just get frustrated if the referendum won't be given.
The 400-km human chain protest was peaceful but only became a bit troubling when about 20 demonstrators who were in favour of unity launched a substance similar to a tear gas which injured about five individuals.
