'Catching Fire' Heats Up US and AU Box Office, Frozen Not Far Behind
Catching Fire exceeds the expected box office figures during the last weekend records in both the US and Australia.
After opening in the US to a staggering $158 million last weekend, the second installment of The Hunger Games series added $74.5 million into their figures during the Thanksgiving weekend. They also top off the box office records on Black Friday with $31.3 million. Adding these figures up, Catching Fire earns a total of $250 million for the past eight days, exceeding The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises in earning the same number as soon as the film opens in theaters.
Catching Fire follows new Hunger Games victors Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) as they participate in the Quarter Quell under close scrutiny of Capitol President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland).
Next in US box office charts is Frozen which opened Wednesday and earned $26.3 million within two days. But Friday saw an increase in figures as it grossed $26.9 million. Overall, the animated film earns a total of $66.7 million over the three-day weekend.
Disney's newest animated feature follows Anna (voiced by Kirsten Bell) as she searches for her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel) with the help of mountain man Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), his reindeer Sven and Olaf the Snowman (Josh Gad).
Meanwhile, Catching Fire opened in Australia last November 21 and has landed the top spot in the box office on the first four days alone with AU$12.4 million, eclipsing the rest of the top ten movies combined. Up until Wednesday, it has earned AU$15.9 million.
Disney fans from Down Under, however, may have to wait a little longer as Frozen is to be out in Australian theaters on Dec. 26.
Rounding up the US top 5 movies over the Thanksgiving weekend are: Thor: The Dark World with $4.5 million, The Best Man Holiday with $3.4 million, and Delivery Man with $2.7 million.
On the other hand, last week's number one Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa slid down to the number two spot with AU$2.3 million, followed by Doctor Who: Day Of The Doctor with AU$1.8 million. Rounding up Australia's top five for Nov. 21-27 are Thor: The Dark World with AU$1.7 million and Captain Philips with nearly AU$651,000.
