The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has sought help from stars to encourage young Australians to register to vote in the federal election.

Comedian Dave Hughes, TV presenter Ruby Rose, swimmer Eamon Sullivan, actors Aaron Pederson and Matthew Werkmeister, models Tahnee Atkinson and Laura Dundovic and AFL footballers Tom Scully and Jack Watts are just some of the stars who have lent their names to the AEC campaign.

With more than 1.4 million people missing from the electoral roll - and about 70 per cent of these aged 18 to 39 - the AEC wants to let the Australians know that even famous people vote too.

Hughes has participated in the short video that aims to convince Australians to include their names to the roll before the election that is expected later this year.

"Nothing gets me going more than people whingeing about governments or politicians when they won't even vote," he said.

"If you want to have a say, do something about it and get on the roll because your vote is worth just as much as James Packer's or Nicole Kidman's."

The AEC is giving prizes every week to encourage young Australians to upload photos or videos to the website - www.famouspeoplevotetoo.com - and explain why it is important to vote.

The website will be supported by an additional campaign on social networking websites.
