Champions League: Blowout Loss to England Triggers Australia’s Downfall at Champions Trophy
Aussie Captain Believes Baggy Greens Need To Patch Holes Before Facing England in Ashes Tour
The Australian Cricket Team bowed out of the Champions Trophy following their 20-run loss to Sri Lanka in the final game of the preliminary round on Monday at the Oval.
It was a heartbreaking for the Green Badgers, who produced a solitary win in three Champions League matches. Frustrations also mounted following the dismissal of Aussie batsmen David Warner for punching England's Joe Root right after Australia's 48-run loss to England on June 8.
For stand in Captain George Bailey, the opening game thrashing they received at the hands of the English cricket team really shattered their confidence for the entire tournament.
"Losing to England by 45 runs. That hurt us. That was our major cock-up," Bailey told Sportal.com on Tuesday. "We said at the start of the tournament that you need to start well for you to dictate terms and so your confidence is up. The way weather came into it and that ends up playing a really big part. So, I'd say there was a little bit of bad luck."
Australia entered the tournament with high expectations of capturing their third crown at the Champions Trophy. However, the latest setback proved to be a big blow psychologically for the Aussies as they prepare to open their Ashes Tour campaign against England on July 10.
Bailey believes Australia has to patch up everything before they engaged in another tough test against a highly-talented English squad.
"There is probably not a great deal of confidence there," Bailey added.
