“I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway. Deeeaaddddd giveaway!”

The blunt racially-oriented statement came from Charles Ramsey as he was recounting to a local ABC News network how he rescued three Ohio women from captivity after they’ve been kidnapped for more than a decade.

Ramsey famously rescued Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight from his neighbour’s house in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday. The girls had gone missing in three separate incidents from 2002 to 2004. The homeowner, 52-year-old Ariel Castro, has been named a suspect, along with his brothers Pedro Castro, 54, and Onil Castro, 50.

The story of their rescue and the fact that they were found alive are truly amazing, with people calling it a miraculous, but its Ramsey’s animated recounting of how he saved the girls that Internet users find remarkable and amusing.

He is currently being hailed as a hero who did not hesitate to help a stranger’s cry for help. And while various news and blog sites have already printed the event, nothing can beat the Good Samaritan’s version in his own words.

The video of his interview has gone viral online. It has reached over a million YouTube views less than a day after it was uploaded.

“I heard screaming. I’m eating my McDonald’s. I come outside. I see this girl going nuts, trying to get out of the house,” he said. So I go on the porch, and she said, ‘help me get out.’ I’ve been here a long time, so I figured it’s a domestic violence dispute.

“So we kicked the bottom [of the door] and she comes out with a little girl. And she says, ‘call 911, my name is Amanda Berry,’” Ramsey said, admitting that he initially didn’t recognise Berry’s name until he called the emergency hotline.

“I’m calling 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead, you know what I mean?” he recalled.

Ramsey was shocked when there were more victims in the house, saying that he thought the suspect had “big testicles” for pulling off the crime.

“We see this dude everyday, I mean everyday. I’ve been here a year. I barbecued with this dude! We eat ribs and whatnot and listen to salsa music.

He also said that he didn’t suspect his neighbour was doing something sinister, saying, “Not a clue that a girl was in that house or anybody there against their will. Because how he is he just comes out to his backyard, plays with his dog, takes cares of his cars and his motorcycles, and goes back to his house. So he’s just somebody that you look and you look away because he’s not doing nothing but the average stuff.

“There’s nothing exciting about him... well, until today.”

When asked what his reaction on the girls’ faces, he answered, “Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something was wrong here. Dead giveaway.

“Either’s she’s homeless or she’s got problems. That’s all the reasons why she went to a black man.”

His last statement in the interview is controversial in itself, but it’s an accurate observation. As many Netizens have noted, it’s a truthful account that is both sad and hilarious at the same time. What’s even more incredible is that Ramsey said that with a complete lack of bitterness, even laughing at his own statement. And perhaps that’s also why the world is laughing along with him.
