Manchester United have taken their chase for Chelsea's Juan Mata to a higher level Reuters

Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata will be holding talks with his mother club through his agent and father, Mata Sr., this week as regards his future.

Sources indicate that the unsettled playmaker is likely to head back to Spain, with Atletico Madrid leading the race to acquire him initially on loan and making the move permanent in the summer.

The 25-year-old is very much worried about his chances of featuring for the La Roja at the World Cup because of limited opportunities with the west London club.

Mata was reported to have told his acquaintances that he is "angry" with the way he is unfairly treated at Chelsea; the latest of the series of events was when he was taken off the pitch early against Southampton on New Year's Day.

Jose Mourinho has previously stated that he does not want Mata to leave Stamford Bridge, but has further said that the latter is free to go, should he desire to.

Napoli is also an interested party, with Rafa Benitez looking to reunite with his former first-choice midfielder during his stint at Chelsea last year, while Inter Milan is also rumoured to be joining the race.

Atletico may, however, have the upper hand given their good relationship with the Blues which involves loaning goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for three successive seasons.
