Netizens in China may expect to have faster and a wide-ranging coverage of the country's broadband services by 2020.

China's State Council on Saturday announced that it intends to improve the quality as well as coverage of broadband by giving coverage in key public urban areas by 2013 and then providing fixed broadband coverage for half of Chinese households by 2015.

Moreover, it wants the roll-out of broadband coverage in urban and rural areas completed by 2020.

"China's newly elected leadership pays a great attention on broadband built, and I believe the new version of 'Broadband China' strategy, with concrete development measures, will be released soon," Cao Shumin, Director of China Academy of Telecom Research, MIIT, was quoted by People's Daily Online.

The "Broadband China" strategy effectively targets not just to speed up network coverage, but also to reduce the costs of service fees, and then expand to reach the farther parts of the country.

"The government calls it important tech facilities instead of basic communication equipment, so we can sense that broadband development is up to a strategic level," Cao Shumin said.

"Generally speaking, China's broadband development is at the middle and lower levels across the world. The situation does not match the country's position as the world's second largest economy," Fu Liang, a Beijing-based independent telecom analyst, was quoted by China Post.

According to the China Post, 40 per cent of Chinese households will gain access to fixed broadband while 25 per cent will have access 3G or 4G mobile broadband services, all by end of 2013.

By 2015, the State Council expects that households' fixed broadband coverage should have grown to 50 per cent. Mobile broadband coverage, on the other hand, must reach above 32.5 per cent.

China expects 270 million fixed broadband user and 850 million Internet surfers by 2015.
