China's Desert Lines Demystified
The world was abuzz over a few speculations on what are those white lines found over a desert in China. Google Map users have found the gigantic structures in China's Gobi Desert. The white lines were speculated to be many things including an alien landing site or a secret military site.
The images of the lines looks like a net made of triangles in a rectangular box. Sand swept on some portion of the structures hints of it being a level surface along the area with the lines most likely to be roads.
There are also reports that some unidentified party ordered hundreds of photographs of the place since 2006.
A research technician and mission planner for the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University offered an explanation for such lines. Jonathon Hill has said that they are spy satellite calibration targets and are not surprising given that China is known to operate spy satellites and the United States have also operated a number of spy satellites themselves.
"They have gaps in them where they cross little natural drainage channels and the lines themselves are not perfectly filled in, with lots of little streaks and uneven coverage. I think it's safe to say these are some kind of paint," Mr. Hill stated hinting that lines are not roads at all from his interview with Fox News.
Other structures are being uncovered in Google maps as many users, specifically readers of tech blog Gizmodo, looked for other undiscovered structures. Some of the places were found with what seems to be a military testing facility with a few destroyed vehicles, radar stations and another one of China's spy satellite calibration grids.
With the unrestricted access of Google Maps, are governments unable to hide secret facilities from prying eyes anymore? Will they resort to underground facilities from now on?
No official explanations were given by the Chinese government for the calibration grids and no hints of it ever giving one are expected.
