Chinese Teenage Girl Helps Pregnant Woman, Gets Sexually Assaulted by Husband, Killed then Dumped, Netizens Gets Jaded
Hu Yixuan only wanted to help a distressed pregnant get safely to her home to the waiting arms of her husband. Little did she know that her kindheartedness would lead to her untimely death.
"The girl's compassion was what cost her life. All I wish is to see the criminals' conviction as soon as possible," one online user wrote in Sina Weibo, China's Twitter equivalent.
"The victim was such a beautiful girl. You can't even do a good deed anymore without being exploited. What's wrong with people?" a female netizen wrote, still on Sina Weibo.
On July 24, seeing a pregnant woman, identified with a surname Tan, getting ill on the streets, the 17-year-old Hu good naturedly accompanied her to her home. Upon arriving home, in an apparent gesture to return her kindness, the pregnant woman offered her yogurt. It was unfortunately laced with crushed sleeping pills.
Succumbing to the effects of the drug, it was then that the poor teenage girl was turned over to the husband to be raped. Afterwards, the couple suffocated her with a quilt, put her body in a suitcase and then dumped it a few miles away from Huanan county in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.
The incident, which was reported by Heilongjiang Morning News, triggered not only compassion and pity for young Hu, but it also sparked a massive wave of fear and confusion on promoting kindness on others among Chinese netizens.
"Would you help a pregnant woman cross the street?" a poll on Sina Weibo said. Out of the 1,054 respondents, a whopping 86.7 per cent said, "No, I'm afraid of being tricked."
"What this incident took away wasn't just a young girl's life, but taking away all the compassion in this world," a Shanxi netizen was prompted to comment after seeing the results.
A measly less than 20 per cent believed there are still good people out there. "Yes, I will still do it since most people are inherently good."
"This girl was so kind-hearted. It was tragic that something like that happened to her. After I read her story in the paper, I felt extremely angry," a local surnamed Xu told Heilongjiang Morning News.
