The new “Garfield” movie has finally gotten its release date.

The film, which will see Chris Pratt voicing the famous fat cat from Jim Davis’ comic strip, has been given a Feb. 16, 2024 release date by Sony, Variety reported Wednesday.

Aside from Pratt, the Alcon Entertainment animated film is also headlined by Samuel L. Jackson, who plays a brand-new character named Vic.

The movie will be special to fans of the comics since this will be the first time for them to meet Garfield’s father, Vic. Unfortunately, plot details on how Vic got back into his son’s life remain under wraps.

No other cast member has been revealed thus far, but the movie is expected to feature classic characters from the franchise, including Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle and the dim-witted dog Odie.

The movie is directed by Mark Dindal, famous for “Chicken Little” and “Emperor’s New Groove.” The script was penned by “Finding Nemo” writer David Reynolds.

Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to Garfield from Jim Davis before the project stared. The comic strip and franchise creator will be part of the movie as an executive producer, according to Deadline.

Aside from Davis, Bridget McMeel and Craig Sost are executive producing. Meanwhile, John Cohen, Andrew Kosove, Tom Jacomb, Steven P. Wegner, Namit Malhotra and Broderick Johnson are on board as producers.

Sony Pictures will distribute the new “Garfield” movie worldwide, excluding China.

Before Pratt, Bill Murray famously voiced the orange feline in two live-action and CGI-hybrid movies: 2004’s “Garfield: The Movie” and 2006’s “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.”

Even though both films received negative reviews, they managed to be commercially successful. They even spawned other projects, including the direct-to-video films “Garfield Gets Real,” “Garfield’s Fun Fest” and “Garfield’s Pet Force.”

The franchise also released several animated series, including “The Garfield Show” and “Garfield and Friends.”

In addition to “Garfield,” Pratt will also voice Mario in the upcoming “Super Mario Bros.” film from Illumination. He will also appear as Star-Lord in the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie next year.
