Christchurch earthquake prompts Virgin Blue to cease services
The Virgin Blue Group of Airlines (ASX: VBA) has ceased services to the New Zealand city of Christchurch today in the aftermath of the earthquake that has caused wide-spread damage.
Virgin Blue Group Executive Operations Sean Donohue said Christchurch Airport had closed.
“We are awaiting information from the airport and other regulatory authorities about the state of the runway; infrastructure and electricity to the airport before we can make any assessment about re-commencing services.
“I can confirm that we had no aircraft on the ground in Christchurch. One Pacific Blue flight en route from Melbourne (DJ60) has diverted to Auckland. Those guests will be accommodated there until the situation is determined in Christchurch,” he said.
Mr. Donohue said that guests holding reservations for travel today and tomorrow were encouraged to go to the Virgin Blue website www.virginblue.com.au for updates and information regarding our flexible travel policies.
“Guests in Australia requiring additional information should dial 13 6789 and Guests in New Zealand requiring assistance should dial +61 7 3295 2296 and 0800 67 0000.
“Our focus at this time is ensuring the safety and welfare of our all team members. Our thoughts are with the people of Christchurch,” Mr. Donohue said.
