The Australian Federal police had warned all Aussies travelling for Christmas against committing airport mischief that they might have thought to be funny but poses threats to all passengers.

All inappropriate and anti-social behaviour at airports and on commercials flights over the whole Christmas season will not go unnoticed, Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said through an official statement. Such behaviour includes false threats, assaulting an airline crew member, or endangering the safety of an aircraft.

May all be warned these mischief all carry maximum penalties of 10 years in jail, Mr Keenan said.

The AFP operates an Air Security Officer program, where members fly on selected domestic and international flights to ensure the safety of the travelling public.

"The AFP will not hesitate to take action against those who commit offences at airports or in the air. Airport security and passenger safety are serious matters, and abusive and irresponsible behaviour poses a danger to passengers and crew alike. People who harass airline staff and fellow passengers are committing an offence and face serious penalties of up to 10 years jail," Mr Keenan said.

Meanwhile, to make everything enjoyable and make passengers comfortable with their flights, AFP, through their Facebook page, posted travelling tips for a smooth journey in a lighthearted tone.

1. Airports and your safety are serious stuff. Don't be foolish.

2. Know what's in the bag you're carrying. There are some things you can't take on the plane.

3. Don't joke about it. See point 1.

4. The only word starting with 'b' that we want to hear is "bon voyage". DO NOT make jokes about 'bombs'.

5. Remember, there are some things you can't take into the sterile area. See point 3.

6. Don't leave your bags unattended. At best, they might be stolen. At worst, they could close down the terminal.

7. Don't leave your kids unattended. If they're flying without you, hand them over to the airline to look after during the flight.

8. Don't get drunk before or during your flight. At best, you won't be allowed to fly. At worst, you'll be arrested, miss your connection, and end up with a criminal record.

9. At an airport, there are 'in' doors and 'out' doors. Don't go in an 'out' door! You risk having the whole terminal closed down, evacuated, and everyone (including you) having to be re-screened. Not smart.

10. Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to check in for your flight.
