Cleveland Kidnapping Victim Michelle Knight’s Poignant Letter to Cleveland Police
During the time when the Cleveland kidnapping made it to the headline of practically all major newspapers around the world, little is known about Michelle Knight. Primarily because she chose it that way, or maybe, just maybe, she was used to being treated the worst among the three victims.
While Amanda Berry was already making big steps to reclaim life through partying on stage with rapper Nelly, Ms Knight is doing little but remarkable steps to life.
In a letter she personally wrote to the Cleveland police, she described herself as a caterpillar metamorphosing to a butterfly.
Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, she became a butterfly.
You don't know how much I appreciate all your time and work collecting cards and gifts from people for me and the other girls. I am overwhelmed by the amount of thoughts, love and prayers expressed by complete strangers. It is comforting. Life is tough, but 'm tougher.
During the trial of Ariel Castro, Ms Berry and Gina DeJesus' statements were read out by their representatives.
Ms Knight read her own statement - a butterfly indeed.
"Christmas was the most traumatic day because I never got to spend it with my son."
"I cried every night; I worried about what would happen to me and the other girls every day. Days never got shorter. Days turned into nights. Nights into days. The years turned into eternity."
Just as she was about to crack tears, she addressed Mr Castro.
"I spent 11 years in hell, and now your hell is just beginning. I will overcome all of this that happened. You will face hell for eternity. From this moment on, I won't let you define me or affect who I am. You will live. I will live on."
"You will die a little everyday... The death penalty would be so much easier. You don't deserve that. You deserve to spend life in prison."
Such strong words came from strong feelings of repugnance to Mr Castro and she has all the right to feel that way.
She was coming from a place of betrayal.
According to the police testimony, Mr Castro abducted Ms Knight while she was lost on her way to the office of a social worker. That day, she was supposed to fight for the custody of her son.
But Mr Castro lured her by saying that he will drive her to the social worker's office. On their way, he said that they will just stop by at his house to pick up a puppy for her to give her son.
However, once inside the house, Mr Castro tied her with an extension cord, put her to the basement, chained her, put a helmet on her and started the decade of rape.
Days after their escape, while Ms Berry and Ms DeJesus were happily reunited with their families, Ms Knight wished for privacy, away from her family. She left the hospital discreetly, not wanting her mother and relatives to know where she was headed.
During the time when she was missing, her mother thought she was just depressed to have lost her custody over her son and thought that she just left home. The police then removed her name from the lost persons' database.
But, as beautiful as a butterfly that she is, she wished not to harbor hate for everything or for anyone.
In their first-ever video released after being freed, Ms Knight spoke of her belief of God's healing power.
"I don't want to be consumed by hatred. With that being said, we need to take a leap of faith and know that God is in control. We have been hurt by people, but we need to rely on God as being judge. God has a plan for us. The plan that he gave me was to help others who have been in the same situations I have been in. To know that there is someone out there to lean on, and talk to."
I am in control of my own destiny, with the guidance of God. I have no problem expressing how I feel inside. Be positive. Learn that it's important to give than to receive. Thank you for all your prayers. I'm looking forward to my brand new life."
