Climate change expert gives glowing review on carbon price
Claiming that installed rooftop solar panels and any other measures even jacked up the electricity costs of many consumers, a climate change expert advising the multi-party created by the federal government insisted that carbon price will do the best job of reducing greenhouse gas at a lower price.
Rod Sims told the committee on Thursday that carbon price is the best available means that would cut down greenhouse gas emissions without much costs for the Australian government.
In presenting his case, Mr Sims pointed out that electricity costs in the country saw increases by up to 30 percent for the past four years, which he said were spikes largely caused by network costs.
He added that other alternatives such as solar panels and windfarms were proving to be too expensive yet ineffective when compared to benefits poised to be delivered by carbon price.
The bottom line, according to Mr Sims, was electricity cost is rising and many Australians were being hit hard especially those "low income earners who couldn't afford the upfront payment for the solar panels in the first place."
However, Mr Sims clarified that while carbon price would not be able to answer all the energy and climate change issues, he maintained that once it is introduced, electricity prices would be reduced and thereby proving that the measure is a much viable alternative when compared to others.
Another adviser of the committee, Ross Garnaut, is set to present his report on factors of carbon pricing by May 2011, in which he is expected to touch on landmark developments in climate change knowledge, global efforts in cutting down carbon emissions and the subsequent public pulse on the possibility of implementing carbon price in Australia.
