Coca-Cola Japan Set to Introduce Warm Hot Ginger Ale – But With a Fizz – in a Can

Coca-Cola Japan, gearing up for the coming winter months, is set to introduce in October the Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale, a warm, hot ginger ale drink that not only comes in a can but also includes the bubbly fizz.

In Japan, during its winter months, it is not unusual to see vending machines selling hot drinks such as tea, coffee and soup in innovative self-heating cans. But Coca-Cola Japan took the notch higher to put the fizz in its Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale, an innovation that took four years to materialise.

The creation of the carbonated Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale in can is not only Japan's first, but also the world's.

Made from ginger extract infused with an apple and cinnamon flavouring, a chemical concoction causes an exothermic reaction once a can of Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale is opened, thus making it to self-heat. Coca-Cola Japan assured the beverage stays fizzy despite being hot.

Hot Can Inc, one of the companies that created the technology, said it used "double-chambered aluminium" to help achieve the sustaining heat.

The 180ml winter warmer Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale will go on sale in Japan's nationwide vending machines starting Oct 21 for $1.30 a can.

It is not known if it will be sold in the U.S. and elsewhere, according to the local Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
