Community Employment Expos Drawing More Australians
Community employment expos are taking Australia by storm, with the aim of finding employment for those from less advantaged backgrounds.
In Rockhampton showgrounds today job seekers will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and meet more than 50 prominent Queensland employers, as well as education and training specialists.
Now in its third year, the Rockhampton Indigenous Employment and Careers Expo will see more than 1,500 Indigenous job seekers and school leavers from throughout the region attend the expo, which is run in conjunction with former origin greats.
To entice young people, former and current league players including Sam Backo, Gary Belcher, Allan Langer, Steve Walters, Colin Scott, Ashley Harrison, Steve Price and Steve Bell will attend the event. The players will chat with young attendees and encourage job seekers and students to take advantage of the opportunities on offer.
There will be industry demonstrations as well as 55 exhibitors from a variety of secots including education, employment, government and health, construction, mining, energy and corporate and business.
Next month will also see the Fraser Coast host their annual job fair, with the now annual Fraser Coast Job Mart on 6 September.
Regional councillor Gerard O'Connell said the Job Mart will attract 40 exhibitors, and he congratulated local business and companies in the region for their support, despite tough economic times hitting the local industries and communities.
With the jobs expo designed for students and high school graduates, as well as the general public, he said "It really is a region rolling up its sleeves and doing something for itself." Graduate opportunities for TAFE and university students will also be on offer.
Queensland Police Service, Ergon Energy, manufacturing companies and smaller local businesses have all signed on to display their HR offerings at the local jobs fair.
