According to ABC Online, Conservation Councils stated that immediate steps are necessary to protect Swan and Canning rivers.

The chief scientist of Western Australia, Lyn Beazley, handed over her report on the bereavement of six dolphins in the rivers last year.

A number of recommendations were made which includes enhanced monitoring of the health of rivers and a high priority assessment of the remaining dolphins.

Professor Lyn Beazley also proposed the State Government to organize a working group to monitor the ongoing health of the mammals.

Donna Faragher, the Minister of Environment, stated that the proposal will be implemented, but Piers Verstegen from the Conservation Council claims that may not be enough.

He said that the suggestions from the chief scientist's report form addresses some of the gaps of information and will aid them in learning more about dolphin deaths and the Swan River situation, but they need more information regarding the collapsing river system.

It is suggestive of a whole range of ecosystems in Western Australia that are under tremendous stress and pressure due to pollution and the impacts of development.

Faragher also stated that the government is perpetrating another $3.3 million for projects to help protect the Swan and Canning rivers.
