A major Australian building and construction industry association in Victoria is calling on the State Government to honour its election promises in Tuesday’s State Budget by cutting Stamp Duty and reforming the planning system.

Association Executive Director Brian Welch said that the Master Builders Association of Victoria had compiled a pre-budget document to act as a policy framework for the year ahead.

“We have compiled a ‘wish list’ of items that we believe will improve the business environment of the Building and Construction Industry and subsequently the housing market for all Victorians,” Mr Welch said.

“We are asking that the State Government honour its State Election commitment to reduce the Stamp Duty burden for first homeowners by 20 per cent for purchases up to $600,000 and for senior Victorians.

Master Builders said it also asked that the State Government updates its planning document to take into account the revised population estimates to recognise the key role of infill development.

“This would include identifying zones for ‘as-of-right’ multi occupancy development to offer better housing choices for all Victorians.

“By implementing these key budget items, the State Government would go a long way towards improving the business environment for Victorian builders and improving housing choices for all Victorians.”

The pre-budget wish list will be uploaded to www.mbav.com.au on Monday.
