Cricket announcer Glenn Mitchell resigns from ABC
Sports broadcasting veteran, Glenn Mitchel,l has resigned from Aussie airwave titan, ABC, after a long 20-year contract - including a much celebrated writing and hosting stint at ABC Radio sports show Grandstand. Mitchell is popularly known as a sports announcer and commentator on national cricket matches.
The broadcaster famous for his coverage of the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, handed his resignation letter to ABC radio headquarters yesterday after a successful and fruitful career. Manager of Grandstand, Craig Norenbergs, extends his praises and gratitude for Mitchell, describing him as a "talented broadcaster". Norenbergs also commended Mitchell for "setting the standard" in sports broadcasting and wishes to discuss possible commentator opportunities.
Aside from being a caller for the Olympics, Mitchell made his mark in sports broadcasting when he called AFL and WAFL Aussie Rules football matches and overseas Australian cricket tours. Mitchell became ABC's top and most influential cricket commentator during this time. During his career, Mitchell got involved with various sports groups, causes, and organizations such as the Coaching Federation of Western Australia, and became director of the Western Australian Paralympic Committee. Because of his stern dedication to improve local and national sports, Mitchell was granted with the Australian Sports Medal by the nation's Governor- General.
It was reported that Mitchell made his decision to leave after a stormy meeting with ABC executives last week. No confirmations or statements have been released regarding the said meeting.
