Cricket Australia top official James Sutherland grilled Australian cricket team batsman David Warner for what he considered a despicable action after assaulting English batman Joe Root at a Birmingham night club on Sunday.

Sutherland was reportedly furious on what transpired over the week, blaming the entire Australian cricket team for their complete lack of responsibility to handle the situation.

Warner, who pleaded guilty of punching the Englishman on the face, is set to miss the entire Champions Trophy tournament and two warm-up games prior to the first Ashes test. The lefty is also ordered to pay a $11,500 fine.

Sutherland thinks Warner is still lucky less harsher punishments as expected, however, the suspension could deal a big blow on the batsman in keeping his top order position for the Ashes series-opener at Trent Bridge roughly four weeks from now.

"I think he's very lucky," he said in Brisbane on Friday. Sutherland told AAP on Friday. "It could have been a lot worse."

The Cricket Australian boss added he's going to monitor Warner's behavior in the succeeding months and reassess if he's worthy to be included in the Baggy Green's future campaigns.

"It counts for a little bit but not much," Sutherland added "What counts is his actions going forward in the future and we're watching those very closely. He's under no illusions to the direction his career is heading right at this moment."
