Just how far will you go to get your parents attention? In "Criminal Minds" Season 9, Episode 4 titled To Bear Witness, the BAU team dealt with a case where the unsub took unbelievable lengths in bearing a grudge and attaining his version of revenge.

Imagine kidnapping another person, conducting lobotomy take away his ability to speak and write, implanting a camera in his eye, and using him as an instrument for your ultimate revenge. And let's not forget the torture and the sadism in between.

And in classic villain mode for "Criminal Minds," David Anders plays the role of the unsub, who sadistically lobotomizes two men and tortures his own sister just so he could make a mark on his father's radar.

As with some of the past suspects encountered in "Criminal Minds," he had felt like the victim in his own way, what with being treated as a disappointment by his own father and unwittingly forever overshadowed by his smarter sister.

But justice was also served for what he had done, because despite being proud of what he had done, when the unsub had come face-to-face with his father, he barely looked at him with anything except disappointment. And the way Anders's face breaks down is proof of that.

Still as a whole, "Criminal Minds" Season 9 Episode 4 may be one of the less spectacular and fleshed out episodes of the season, as there were hardly the more "aha!" or "oh no!: moments that the show is known for.

Welcome the New Guy

"Criminal Minds" Season 9, Episode 4 was also the first entry of Esai Morales who plays Matt Cruz, the new section chief. At the start, he and JJ (AJ Cook) ran into each other jogging, and you hear the first hints of a secret as JJ clearly says that they shouldn't meet like that.

The BAU team as a whole was still trying to get a feel of how to treat their new boss, and each has a different reaction. Morgan (Shemar Moore) was more straightforward, suggesting that someone like him should just stay in a desk job. Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) took the responsibility of easing him into their company.

JJ was the one who was clearly on edge, and it's not too far a leap to wonder if Rossi (Joe Mantegna) already has his profiler feelers out to sense the situation.

So What Happens Now?

Based on "Criminal Minds" Season 9 Episode 4 alone, obviously, the tension in the team is centered on JJ now.

There's an ever growing and deepening mystery of what exactly she was to Cruz and what he was to her. More importantly, what exactly brought them together enough to have a "past" that JJ seems to be afraid of bringing up?

Cruz, on the other hand, seems to be more active in the field compared to the late Strauss, but he doesn't seem to pose a problem as he was in no way domineering over the way Hotch and the team handled the case.

But perhaps eyes will now turn to JJ--you know something is off when JJ opts for a little white lie even to the likes of Rossi when he asked if she knows Cruz.
