Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks A 79-Year-Old La Liga Record
Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has once again made history last weekend when he broke the 79-year-old record of La Liga as he made 17 goals in 10 La Liga games. The 29-year-old football superstar's stellar performances appeared to improve more since his record-breaking transfer to Madrid from Manchester United in 2009. Apparently, there seems to be no limits to his potential.
Two weeks ago, the forward of the Spanish club La Liga surpassed the record of Esteban Echevarria of 14 goals in seven La Liga games in 1943 by scoring a double in 5-0 win over Levante. As if that record wasn't enough, Cristiano Ronaldo added another two goals from the match against Granada and Barcelona last weekend, which took his tally to 17. According to the Spanish publication AS, Ronaldo broke the long-standing record of Isidro Langara, with his recent goal in the 4-0 rout of Granada. The record of 16 goals in the first 10 games of the season was set way back in 1935.
Next up on Ronaldo's list is the La Liga prize, after he jointly held the Premier League highest scoring record in a single season in a campaign with Manchester United. Ronaldo and Luis Suarez of FC Barcelona were both recipients of the Golden Boots for 2013-2014 for being top goal scorers in Europe last season.
Ronaldo's 31 goals in La Liga for Real Madrid was matched by Suarez in the Premier League for Liverpool. The 27-year-old Uruguayan's haul enabled him to beat the previous record for one season at Liverpool, beating the 28 goals of Robbie Fowler in 1995-1996. A previous report suggested that Ronaldo refused to receive the award at the same ceremony as Suarez.
It has been a great season for Cristiano Ronaldo, and given his accomplishments this year, he is one of the main favourites to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or, which will be given on January 12, 2015 in Zurich, Switzerland. Furthermore, this season, if Ronaldo maintains his form and is able to sustain the 1.7 goals per game, he could outdo his rivals by quite a distance.
