Cristiano Ronaldo Strips to His Undies and Joins the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Cristiano Ronaldo joined the ice bucket challenge, but he did it in a fashionable way. Ronaldo stripped down to his undies after his for Manchester United teammate Darren Fletcher nominated him to do the ice bucket challenge.

"Happy to take part of it #ALS #icebucketchallenge @JMC_Foundation," Ronaldo posted on Instagram.

The Real Madrid superstar needed a little help from his Portugal compatriot and teammate Fabio Coentrao, who poured a bucket of ice water on him. Then, Ronaldo threw down the gauntlet and called out Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Li'l Wayne to do the ice bucket challenge.

Other football greats who have participated in the ice bucket challenge were Neymar and Ronaldo's Real Madrid fellow player Marcelo.

The ice bucket challenge has been taking social media by storm. Countless of videos of celebrities dumping ice cold water over their heads has plagued the online world. In addition to the amusement that the campaign brings, it has also raised donations and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain.

As of Aug. 16, the ALS Association has received more than 600% of the total donations that the organisation has received during the same period in 2013. The ALS Association has collected $11.4 million in donations in just a little over two weeks compared to the $1.7 million worth of donations received in 2013. The campaign started on July 29 and still ongoing.

According to the statement posted on ALS Association' official website, the money will be used to fund "groundbreaking research about the disease," provide support and care for people with Lou Gehrig's disease," and "support government programs to find cure and treatment for ALS."

Barbara Newhouse, President and Chief Executive Officer of The ALS Association, said that no words can express the gratitude that they feel for all the contributions and donations that the organisation has received.

"The money and the awareness generated through this effort are truly game-changers in the fight against this disease," Ms. Newhouse said.

The ALS Association is the only non-profit organisation in the U.S. that is focused on Lou Gehrig's disease.
