‘Cruel Intentions’ TV series: Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise role, posts #TBT photo
The original Kathryn Merteuil is back! Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed she’s reprising her iconic role in the TV adaptation of “Cruel Intentions.”
Gellar, 38, starred in the 1999 hit teen drama flick as the beautiful and popular Kathryn, whose bet with her stepbrother Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) set the film’s conflicts. The US TV series will also feature Kathryn in a major role, and therefore it’s imperative that Gellar plays the character again.
And play the character she will. The former “Buffy” star has revealed that she will be joining the upcoming NBC series. And as proof, she posted a #throwbackthursday photo and a current one of her with Neal Moritz, the film’s executive producer, and Roger Kumble, the writer and director. Moritz will also produce the TV series, along with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross, while Kumble will direct the pilot.
“That’s right, ‘everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way,’” Gellar quoted Kathryn’s famous line.
The upcoming show will centre on Bash Casey, the son of Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon) and Sebastian, and his introduction to the world of depravity, sex, money and power after discovering his father’s journal. Kathryn, meanwhile, will fight for the control of Valmont International and Bash.
It was recently announced that “American Crime” actor Taylor John Smith will play Bash, while “666 Park Avenue” actress Samantha Logan will play Cassidy, the spoilt daughter of Kathryn’s husband, Deadline reports.
It’s unknown if Witherspoon will also be reprising her role, or if Phillippe will at least make a cameo appearance. It can be recalled that Phillippe’s character, Sebastian, died in the end of the film, while Kathryn’s beloved reputation was shattered.
While “Cruel Intentions” received mixed reviews from critics, it was triumphant at the box office, earning US$76 million (AU$108 million) worldwide. It won Best Film – Drama at the Teen Choice Awards, and Gellar and co-star Selma Blair won Best Kiss at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards.
