Cycling Champ Pleads Guilty to Obscene Exposure
Former world cycling champion Gary Neiwand has pleaded guilty to flashing before two women but will remain temporarily free on an extended bail to continue his counseling treatment.
The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard Neiwand's guilty plea on Monday and Deputy Chief Magistrate Jelena Popovic set the next hearing on March 5 to get an update on his treatment.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Allison Cooper told the court that Neiwand, 45, exposed his genitals to a female cyclist who stopped on the road in Elwood on Jan. 24. From his car, he called the woman, who saw him masturbating when she leaned and looked down the window.
According to The Age, the woman quoted Neiwand as telling her: "Can you finish this off."
The retired track cyclist then drove off but the woman got his car's plate number to track him down.
The second incident happened in Ascot Vale on May 16. Neiwand again pulled alongside a woman walking her dog and asked for direction. He called her to come closer and when she did, the woman saw him masturbating.
The second victim also took Neiwand's car registration number.
Neiwand won a gold medal in sprint in the 1986 Commonwealth Games and in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He won another gold in the same event in the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
The following year, he won a bronze medal in the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany.
Neiwan became World Champion in keirin and sprint in 1993 and claimed his third successive gold medal in the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
