Cycling News: Bradley Wiggins To Ride With Team Sky Until April
Bradley Wiggins has signed a short-term contract extension with Team Sky and the deal is expected to run until the end of April 2015 only. Wiggins will compete with the team in the 2015 Paris-Roubaix race before calling it quits for the team which he rode with since 2010. This is the sixth year that Wiggins has been with Team Sky and he is expected to have his own road team after his contract expires with Team Sky.
"Paris-Roubaix is a special race for me and I’m determined to give it another go in Team Sky colours," Wiggins said in a The Telegraph article. "It’s one of the toughest races in the calendar and my aim is to improve on my ninth-place finish last year.”
After the 2015 Paris-Roubaix event, the 34-year-old Wiggins will begin preparations for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Team Sky is one of the many teams Wiggins has raced for in his cycling career. He was with the Linda McCartney Racing Team in 2001, Française des Jeux (2002 and 2003), Crédit Agricole (2004 and 2005), Cofidis (2006 and 2007) Team High Road (2008) and Garmin-Slipstream (2009).
"We’re delighted that Bradley’s extended his contract with Team Sky into 2015. He’s been with Team Sky since the beginning and during that time he’s been an incredible ambassador for cycling and an inspiration to millions of people around the world,” Team Sky general manager said of Wiggins’ decision. "Rightly he still has big ambitions for the future and everyone at Team Sky will work their hardest to make his final chapter with us a successful one over the next few months.”
Wiggins placed third in overall in the 2009 Tour de France and won the title in the 2012 Tour de France. He also won gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Individual and Team Pursuit events.
