Cyclist Alberto Contador cleared of drug-enhancement use
Spain's cycling federation clears three-time Tour De France champion, Alberto Contador
Three-time Tour de France champion, Alberto Contador has been cleared Tuesday by the Spain’s cycling federation of all the accusations hurled against him for allegedly using muscle-building drug.
Contador has expressed relief following the dramatic development on his alleged use of banned substance.
"I'm relieved and obviously happy about this ruling. It has been some very stressful months for me, but throughout the case I have been totally available for all inquiries," the Agence France Presse, quoted the cyclist as saying in reaction to the federation’s final ruling on his case.
Contador announced in August last year that he had tested positive for miniscule traces of clenbuterol while participating in the Tour De France in July. He insisted however that he had not taken the enhancement drug deliberately, emphasizing that he must have taken the drugs from a steak he consumed at that time.
The 28-year old cyclist has been asserting his innocence since the news came out of his alleged use of illegal drugs. And to prove his virtuosity, Contador said that he has been truly cooperative with authorities in the process.
"All the way through I have spoken in accordance with the truth," Contador said, according to AFP.
The federation stated in its rulings that the decision to clear Contador was based on the evidence presented in the case and the explanation submitted by Contador on the circumstances how he had consumed the banned substance.
With his name cleared, Contador can now join the race this year. The AFP said that the cyclist will ride in the Tour of Algarve in southern Portugal Wednesday.
