'Da Vinci's Handbag': Turning a 500-year-old Sketch Into Modern Fashion
The scientist, artist and sculpture, Leonardo Da Vinci, has illustrated a unique purse on a piece of paper for more than 500 years ago. Today, an Italian leather goods corporation, Gherardini, has begun producing Da Vinci's extraordinary purse.
The high-end handbag maker, Gherardini, has manufactured a limited edition of a purse designed by the visionary. It was reported that the design dates back in 1497, when Da Vinci sketched it on a piece of paper.
The original design can be found at the 12-volume The Codex Atlanticus book of notes, theories, illustrations and other things that Da Vinci has collected and kept from 1478 to 1519. Together with the sketch of the purse were drawings of weaponry, math problems and solutions, a few data about botany and some thoughts regarding flying devices.
The bag was named 'Pretiosa,' which means 'precious' in the Italian language. One reason for its name is the handcrafted construction, wherein detailed decorations have been emphasized. To give justice to the design, the makers of the bag makes sure that even the tiniest details are noticed.
Every calfskin purse is decorated with carefully hand-sewn embroidery and the bag's handle is a hand-etched brass handlebar. There are about 99 presently on offer and for sale. While one is trying to figure out the price, consider asking someone, who works for the manufacturer.
The bags will be sold on March 1 later this year.
