Dalai Lama: Motivational Quotes on Inner Peace from the Templeton Prize Awardee
The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, on Monday received the annual Templeton Prize at St Paul's Cathedral in London.
According to the Templeton Foundation website, the Templeton Prize was established in 1972 by the late Sir John Templeton to honor "entrepreneurs of the spirit." It honors personalities who have "made an exceptional contribution to affirming life's spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works."
The recognition was designed to carry a prize that is higher than what is given to Nobel Prize winners, according to Sir John Templeton's obituary in The Economist in July 2008.
Templeton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1987 for his philanthropic efforts.
The Dalai Lama shared his prize money with Save the Children, an international organization for malnourished children. The NGO received around one million pounds (about $1.6 million) from the spiritual leader.
Dalai Lama followers believe their leader is the latest reincarnation of enlightened spiritual leaders who have taken a path to rebirth in order to enlighten others. By choosing to be reincarnated the dalai lamas are delaying nirvana, which means the end of suffering.
Dalai Lama is a combination of the Sino-Mongolian word "dalai" meaning "ocean," and the Tibetan word bla-ma (pronounced with silent "b") meaning "chief, high priest."
Here are some motivational quotes meant to inspire inner peace from the Dalai Lama, as heard in a public speech he delivered in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 15 this year:
"Satisfaction brings us inner peace."
"I believe the purpose of education is to reduce the gap between reality and appearances."
"The real destroyer of inner peace is fear and distrust. Fear develops frustration, frustration develops anger, anger develops violence."
"Respect all religions, but also respect nonbelievers."
"Forgiveness and forgetfulness are very different. Forgiveness does not mean to accept the wrongdoing. The real sense is to not keep negative feelings toward that person."
"World peace must come through inner peace. Inner peace is essential including your healthy body. Healthy body is very much linked to healthy mind."
