Dana Mathers leads US fashion trend
Australian fashion designer Dana Mathers has been credited with leading a new fashion trend in the US.
Mathers' "Cassie" gown, a hi-lo cut that reintroduced the style some 12 months ago has quickly been referenced by the broader fashion industry.
Versace recently dressed Christine Aguilera for the MTV Movie Awards in a gown that could be said to have owed its interpretation to the "Cassie".
January Jones wore a hi-lo at the Emmys while other stars including Jessica Alba and Victoria Beckham have also been snapped in hi-los in the past few months.
"So many retailers in the US told me that I had brought back the hi-lo and that everybody was referencing the Cassie. I'm flattered that I've influenced a fashion forward trend in the US."
Perth-based Mathers, who largely designs evening wear, is enjoying levels of popularity in the US.
"It's insane. I've only been in the US market for 12 months and I've now over 100 stores stocking my label. My US team is projecting that I will have up to 300 by the end of the year," she said.
That kind of footprint will position Mathers as one of Australia's highest performing fashion exporters.
"I've had US retailers tell me that I've been their best selling brand over and above any other label they've been stocking. One even told me that my range had saved her season," she said.
The Australian designer will be absent from this year's Perth Fashion Festival.
