'Dancing With the Stars' 2014 Cast: KARINA SMIRNOFF Ready for Motherhood Before DWTS Season 18
"Dancing With the Stars" dancer Karina Smirnoff has impressed partners and fans for 17 consecutive seasons on the show but she wants more to life outside the dancer. Smirnoff wants to be a mother. The 35-year-old professional dancer appeared on "Good Morning America" to talk about her motherhood goal and the decision to freeze her eggs.
"It is natural for a woman to want to become a mother," Smirnoff explained. "My profession is dancing. I have been concentrating on my career for a very long time and I love what I do. However, I know I want to be a mother someday."
Smirnoff has decided to freeze her eggs on the heels of recent babies from fellow "Dancing With the Stars" pro dancers, Anna Trebunskaya and Edyta Sliwinska. Smirnoff has competed on DWTS every year since its third season, only opting out in season 10. She won the Mirrorball Trophy with her partner J.R. Martinez once in season 14 and won second place in season 3 with Mario Lopez and in season 17 with Corbin Bleu.
The process required 12 days of estrogen injections before Karina's eggs were retrieved. She admitted it was not an easy decision and not being a fan of needles, she certainly did not enjoy that part. "I actually passed out. It took me one hour to stick the needle inside," she revealed. "It is scary but it is something that you know you are doing for yourself. You feel empowered that you were able to give yourself a chance to not have to worry about your biological clock."
21 eggs have already been extracted and her doctor says it is possible for the eggs to last indefinitely. She has been engaged twice. First was with DWTS pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy and next with baseball player Brad Penny. She is currently single and hasn't found the right guy to start a family with. She told ABC that her decision was "100 percent" worth it.
Smirnoff could be preparing to compete in the upcoming "Dancing With the Stars" Season 18, which premieres Monday, March 17 at 8:00 P.M. on ABC.
