“Dark Knight Rises” Indeed, Batman Serves Jail Time for House Breaking and Illegal Drugs
A Singaporean, whose claim to social media fame was his "heroic" name Batman bin Suparman, is serving jail time for three years for theft, housebreaking and illegal drug use, AFP reports.
Batman, 23, was unemployed when he was arrested on Aug 19 after reviews of CCTV footages revealed his images of breaking into a store for two separate nights. According to court documents obtained by AFP, Batman was able to loot a total of $SG500 from the store.
Batman had also admitted stealing his brother's ATM card and was able to withdraw cash amounting to SG$650.He was also found guilty of heroin use.
Batman bin Suparman had become a social media sensation back in 2008 when his identity card circulated online. His name literally means Batman son of Suparman.
In 2008, Batman purportedly penned a letter published at Gizmodo through which he talked about Real ID.
"I wanted to talk to you about Real ID. Apparently, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security just extended deadlines on Real ID because many states are resisting it," Batman wrote.
"I live in Singapore, where we have had national ID cards for a long time. And while I don't wear my underpants over my pyjamas most of the times, I don't feel any risk to my privacy at all for having it. Why?"
"When I have to use my ID card-which has my photo on it-it's never recorded or scanned. Just shown to the occasional waiter or cashier, so they can be sure that my credit card is not stolen and I'm in fact who I say I am. Why would they want to record it when they already have me in a piece of plastic with a magnetic band? So since all my data is already tied to my credit card and I have to live with it, having an ID card makes me feel safer against crime, just in case I forget my credit card in a public place or it gets stolen in the subway without me noticing for a long time."
What's in a Name?
According to a blog from Ben Zimmer, Batman was born to Javanese parents.
Suparman is a very common name among the Javanese. "The Su- prefix, derived from a Sanskritic root (सु in Devanagari) meaning 'good, fortunate."
An Indonesian Military commander was named Djadja Suparman; a Sudanese traditional musician was named Ade Suparman.
As for the Batman, the character was very popular in Indonesia.
"The Bandung-based rapper Iwa K released a song in the mid-90's called "Batman Kasarung", melding the Batman story with the Sundanese folk character Lutung Kasarung, a prince disguised as a monkey."
