Darwin breakfast radio DJ Mel Little has been sacked for giving her radio station’s competition prizes to her family and friends. Mix 104.9 confirmed that it has fired the announcer on Friday.

Ms Little apparently gave eight of her family and friends tickets to the Darwin Cup Carnival Ladies Day function in the Schweppes Pavillion on July 17 instead of allowing listeners to win them. The tickets are valued at $285 to $325.

The station had encouraged listeners to join the draw for a chance to win one of the eight seats at the station’s table at the event.

“At worst my actions could be described as naive,” Ms Little said in a statement to NT News, insisting that she did not act dishonestly. “I loved my time working at Mix 104.9 and wish them continued success.”

The NT Broadcasters-operated ratio station confirmed that the announcer was sacked on Friday, but refused to disclose how the winners were selected or how many of the eight seats were given away by Ms Little to people who did not enter the contest.

The DJ, formerly known as Mel Hope, has worked with the station since September 2011. She has also worked on-air in Albury, NSW, and Launceston, Tasmania, according to NT News.

The Mix 104.9 table at the Darwin Cup function was paid for the radio station itself.

This isn’t the first time a sacking due to controversy has occurred at NT Broadcasters.

In July 2012, former Mix 104.9 and Hot 100 Program Director Phil Brandel was let go from his post after it was learned that he created an online alias to slander station sponsors and affiliates.
