As reported by Contact Music, retired professional soccer player David Beckham is nominated for knighthood. Yes! Beckham has been chosen to be included in the high-status and exalted ranks of the knights of the monarchy.

In May, the former England football captain has already been rumoured to receive knighthood before the year 2013 ends.

A knighthood is deemed as one of the highest honours that a person in the UK can accomplish. Some of the sports personalities who have already been awarded knighthood include Sir Alex Ferguson, New Zealand cricketer Sir Jack Newman, Sir Ian McGeechan, Formula One racer Sir Frank Williams, professional golfer Sir Bob Charles and many others.

As with Beckham, he may be the youngest individuals to have received the coveted award. It has been reported the superstar's knighthood is in the final talks of approval. Once finalised, Prince William will present the award in the New Year's Honour List.

Beckham will be accompanied by his wife, Victoria, along with the couple's children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, in the ceremony.

According to a source, Beckham's earnings and finances are currently being evaluated. "His Majesty's Revenue and Customs look at the higher honours," a source said. "Most especially at sports people who are known as high-earners," the source added. "Everything has to be assessed to determine if there is anything that needs to be double-checked," said the source.

Beckham's role as an ambassador for Great Britain as well as his charity work will be honoured. In addition, his retirement from his 20-year-old career after winning the French soccer league will also be honoured.

If all goes well, Beckham will be called Sir David and his wife, Lady Victoria.

Unfortunately, the great news came at the same time that Beckham lost his grandmother Peggy West, who passed away on Friday. His grandmother died shortly in the hospital after suffering a stroke. Beckham and his grandmother were very close. She was even present when he received his Order of the British Empire (OBE) award at Buckingham Palace.
