David De Gea Stalls Talks With United To Move To Real Madrid
Manchester United's first choice goalkeeper David de Gea, 24, has so far not put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Manchester United after the end of his present contract which runs out in the summer of 2016. It is understood that he has been tempted by the thought that Real Madrid are considering him to be their long term replacement for Iker Casillas, 33, who is now coming to the end of his career.
Manchester United management led by chief executive Ed Woodward has had talks with de Gea's agent Jorge Mendes about a new contract offering the young Spanish goalkeeper a very lucrative £140,000 a week contract. This will not only double his present wages but also make him one of the highest earning goalkeepers in the world.
David de Gea has so far not signed the contract as he wants assurances from the club that they will continue to sign world class talent in a bid to win trophies. Incidentally manager Louis van Gaal spent a mind boggling £160M last summer and has been provided close to another £200M in the transfer purse to make the side fit to win trophies. So far unfortunately they have not shown that they are capable of winning anything this season. In football things change dramatically and with a few more imports this United side can become a champion team.
Real Madrid on the other hand are already a champion team. They are winning trophies both domestically and internationally. The side is otherwise settled but for the goalkeeping position. Being born and brought up in Madrid, de Gea will find it very hard to resist the temptation to go back to his home town and be presented with arguably the best job that a goalkeeper can dream of.
Should de Gea refuse to sign a new contract, Real Madrid could offer around £25M to Manchester United to land their target. Incidentally Manchester United have just signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on an 18 month deal as a backup for de Gea. "He joins the club as the number two and is a great addition to the team", van Gaal said after the signing.
