Davis Cup 2013, Andy Murray Brings Great Britain Back to the World Group Next Year
World No 3 and British No 1 Andy Murray brings back Great Britain to the 2014 Davis Cup World Group.
The play-off for the Eight Davis Cup World Group happened on Sunday. The Davis Cup started in 1900 as a rivalry between Great Britain and U.S. Today, it is considered as the world's biggest annual international team competition in tennis, with approximately 130 countries joining in 2013.
It's Murray's first Davis Cup in two years and he definitely played a major role in Great Britain's success. He has won both of his matches in Men's Singles, and won the Doubles, as he teamed up with Colin Fleming.
Murray defeated Dodig 6-4 6-2 6-4 and Coric 6-3 6-0 6-3, both of whom are of Croatian descent. These winnings gave him his 16th straight singles rubber victory.
"I am so happy with the way I played today," Murray said. "The Davis Cup is a character builder, and it is really different because you are playing for your own country, and I wanted to try to get us back in to the World Group, not let the team down," he added.
Since March 1986, Great Britain has not won a World Group tie so this is going to be very memorable. In February 2014, Great Britain will be facing the world's top 16 countries during the first round of the World Group.
Andy Murray feels ecstatic to be part of this. "If I am healthy and fit, I will definitely be there to play," says Murray in an interview by BBC Sport. "I think we are extremely ready to play well, we have got a solid team and we will surely strive hard to always improve," he continues.
The team captain of Great Britain was very pleased of Murray's performance during the Davis Cup. "Andy is such a great and an experienced athlete, he played a big part in the team's success" says the team captain.
